Met Gala 2019: Year of the Camp

For this year’s theme, Camp: Notes on Fashion designers and celebrities alike put on quite the show, embracing the flamboyant, vivaciousness that is camp; “camp” (not to be confused with the activity camping) is known in the fashion world as any ensemble or garment representing “exaggeration”. To me, this screams anything Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Madonna, etc. the all-stars that “go big or go home” and never shy away from making the boldest statement on the carpets. Coined by writer Susan Sontag, camp is described as “love of the unnatural”, so very elusive and very eccentric fashions not typically seen on the carpets. The dominating color this year: Schiaperelli “Shocking Pink” which created a fun-filled, vibrant playfulness throughout the gala, while still appearing chic and elegant. The best entrance of the entire decade would definitely have to go to, the queen of Camp, Lady Gaga, who descended upon the carpet with her balloon-like gorgeous gown, twirling in light, dramatic circles, as she was fanned by men in tuxedos. Then, literally 5 minutes later, disrobed to show of her sleek black gown coupled with a Mary Poppin’s style umbrella, once again made a third outfit change to a body-hugging Barbie-like gown, coupled with bedazzled sunglasses, and then undressed to show off a fourth look, complete in black, bedazzled lingerie! Wow, I am floored not just by the seamless outfit changes, but also by the complete adoption of “camp”, with her magical performance on the “Pink Carpet”. This year’s Met Gala, saw golden embellishments, soft and rosy pinks, lots and lots of tulle, and some heavy metallics! This was truly my favorite year to date, thanks to the avant-garde theme encouraging the stars to really break outside of their comfort zone and embrace the gaudy and the eccentric, a truly show-stopping night that will never be forgotten.
